What You Should Know About - Baladin: Italy's #1 Craft Beer
Wednesday, 19 July 2017 06:38

  Teo enfant

1. About 85% of the grains that Baladin uses for its beers come from their own organic farms.

Baladin has about 450ha of land in Piemonte (near the brewery), Basilicata and Marche combined. They are one of only 7 brewers in the world who grow their own cereals and the first beer company that was associated with the Slow Food movement.

2. For Teo Musso, the founder of the Baladin Brewery, beer is passion, an intense love for taste and a form of personal expression.

Through his recipes, he has communicated special moments in his life, sides of his being and his constant search for the perfect sensory balance. Isaac and Wayan tell of the birth of his children, while Nazionale expresses the commitment to working in direct contact with the Earth and the desire to be Italian.

 3. It takes about 4 months from harvest, to fermentation, to stabilization of the beer before bottling.

All of Baladin's beers are non-filtered, refermented in the bottle and non-pasteurized. Baladin also uses six strains of native yeasts -"Lievita Madre"- in their production.

4. In Italy, craft beer is tightly controlled and must meet a strict set of criteria.

No filtration, no pasteurization, no corporate affiliation, and total beer production must be limited to no more than 10,000,000 litres.

5. Baladin are very 'food-friendly beers' which are served in Michelin-starred restaurants all over Europe.

No pasteurization means the aromas and flavours of Baladin beers can be matched to dishes, in a similar way to wines.

6. Baladin is heavily involved in expanding social programs for disadvantaged people.

The company runs a multi-functional vocational school teaching brewing, cooking and other skills applicable to the food and beverage industry.

Baladin Isaac 330ml 5%

Named after Teo Musso's son, the refreshing Isaac is made from raw wheat and flavored with coriander and orange zest from hand-peeled oranges grown on an organic farm in Puglia.

Refreshing to the palate, it is light bodied with a clean finish. Issac is an ideal aperitif, and is well paired with light vegetable appetizers or grilled fish.

Baladin Wayan 330ml 5.8%

Inspired by Saison beers (or farmhouse ale), the Wayan is made with 5 cereals: barley, spelt, wheat, rye and buckwheat; plus 9 spices and 5 peppers, in a renewed mix.

Light to medium bodied with hints of citrus and complex spice, fizzy and refreshing. Ideal with oysters or shellfish, white meat or fresh cheeses.

Baladin Nazionale 330ml 6.5%

Made with hops grown in Cussanio, just a few kilometres away from the Baladin brewery, this is an intentionally simple beer made with 100% Italian ingredients: Italian water, barley malt, hops, yeasts and two Italian spices (organic bergamot from Calabria and coriander) which combine to create harmony and originality.

Baladin Super Bitter 330ml 8%

Undoubtedly, this follows the current trend of bitter beers, but without taking it too far. It has plenty of hoppy aromas - given by the generous use of a particular type of American hops called "Amarillo" - but it remains true to its Baladin identity and strikes a perfect balance with notes of caramel, dried fruit (just a hint) and the bitterness of the hops.
